Cinematographer Anil Mehta informed Aamir Khan that his proposed cricket match for "Lagaan's" climax would not work. Mehta went into detail about the film's climax's shooting.

Recently, cinematographer Anil Mehta went back to rewatch the filming of the pivotal cricket match in "Lagaan." Mehta approached Aamir Khan on the first day of the thirty-day filming and informed him that his ideas wouldn't work for the moment. He often reminded the crew of filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker that they were filming a movie, not a sporting event, during the production.

Mehta recalled Aamir's proposal in an interview with Film Companion, saying, "Now that we have the booklet. You can continue to shoot, and we can keep bringing the batsman one by one. When they reached a six or a four, we would be informed!" On the first day of the shoot, Mehta went with Aamir's proposal, but a day later, he approached Aamir and told him, "This is not how it is going to work." This coverage is beyond me."

The National Award-winning cinematographer continued, saying, "That's how it has to appear if I'm filming a drama. I wanted to be up near Bhuvan (Aamir's character) when he batted. The feelings that Kachra (Aaditya Lakhia) feels while batting must be shown on screen. Every character has distinct feelings. Given that Kachra was differently abled and was unable to adopt the proper stance in order to elevate his bat, I took a series of frightening shots of him using a zoom lens. Every bowler and batter have to be shot in accordance with their character, thus."
