The original director of Bobby Deol's debut film, Barsaat, was Shekhar Kapur, but he chose not to continue. Rajkumar Santoshi finally took over as director.

Bobby Deol made his big screen debut over thirty years ago in Rajkumar Santoshi's romantic action film Barsaat (1995). Originally slated to direct Mr. India and Bandit Queen, Shekhar Kapur chose not to take on the role. Bobby disclosed on the most recent edition of The Great Indian Kapil Show that Shekhar fled because he was "afraid" of his reputation. Given the enormous popularity of his father Dharmendra and older brother Sunny Deol, host Kapil Sharma questioned whether Bobby or the director was afraid to introduce him. Bobby laughed and said, "Maybe that's why Shekhar ran away." Kapur Shekhar. He felt afraid. But Raj went on to direct the movie. However, I didn't realize I was under pressure," Bobby stated on the program.

Shekhar Kapur had even filmed a scene with Bobby prior to leaving the movie to work as director of the highly regarded crime drama Bandit Queen in 1994. Bobby debuted in Barsaat with Twinkle Khanna, and the two of them shared the inaugural acting award. Dharmendra's Vijayta Films produced the movie, which also starred Danny Denzongpa, Raj Babbar, and Mukesh Khanna. It was the fifth most grossing film of the year with ₹29 crore at the box office. It's interesting to note that Bobby acted in another Suneel Darshan-directed movie of the same name in 2005.

Bobby is enjoying his fame from playing the antagonist Abrar in Sandeep Reddy Vanga's family crime drama Animal. His upcoming films will feature him in negative roles once more: Siva's fantasy action film Kanguva, which he will debut in Tamil, followed by his debut Telugu film Hari Hari Veera Mallu - Part 1: Sword vs. Spirit, which he will star in alongside Pawan Kalyan, and NBK109, another Telugu tentpole starring Nandamuri Balakrishna.

However, Shekhar Kapur, who last helmed the British romantic comedy What's Love Got To Do With It? in 2022, is currently directing Masoom: A New Generation, a reworking of his 1983 directorial debut Masoom that will feature his daughter Kaveri.
