Due to cultural difficulties, Abdu Rozik talks about calling off his engagement to his fiancée Amira.
Following four months of engagement, Tajikistani singer Abdu Rozik recently announced the cancellation of his wedding to fiancée Amira. He describes his decision to us in great detail and states that it was a "overwhelming mix of emotions" for him. "When I first learned that the wedding had to be called off, I felt depressed, angry, and even like a failure. He says, "It's never easy to accept that something you have been working for, dreaming for, and planning for won't work out.
He goes on to describe the "cultural differences" that arose between them and how it affected their relationship. As our friendship developed, it became increasingly clear how different we were from one another. We were having trouble filling in some gaps, and I could feel these problems weighing heavily on our future together. The 20-year-old says, "In the end, I realized that starting a marriage with unresolved cultural differences would only result in bigger issues. Cultural differences can be subtle or blatant, and in our situation, it was a combination of both.
For instance, there were disparities in the responsibilities that each of our families expected us to play in the structure of marriage. Amira's side of the family observed some rites and customs that I didn't understand or find comfortable. In the same vein, Amira's determination added a new level of complexity that called for a very particular kind of mental fortitude and acceptance from her whole family."
