Unexpected reasons why people crave sugar:
In response, Prachi Chandra, Lead Clinical Nutritionist at Sakra World Hospital in Bengaluru, stated in an interview with HT Lifestyle that "food cravings, especially sugar cravings, are the dieter's worst enemy." Food cravings vary greatly from person to person. After meals, the majority of us experience cravings for sweets. Reaching for sweet snacks is typically not a result of hunger, but rather of the desire to temporarily comfort oneself by consuming highly processed and appetizing foods, particularly sweets, which activate certain parts of the central nervous system and trigger the brain's reward system, providing the body with a momentary sense of relief, happiness, and mood enhancement.
"The question to be answered is 'Are we becoming sugarholic or sugar addict?'" she said. While occasional sugar cravings are acceptable, regular cravings are not. Additionally, stress, sleep deprivation, magnesium deficiency, eating meals low in fiber and proteins, obesity, hormonal imbalances, and poor gut health all increase the likelihood of sugar cravings.
